Abstract

The closure of the Semipalatinsk test site and the renunciation of nuclear weapons demonstrated the international community’s commitment Kazakhstan world free from violence and the threat of war, and gave the young state political clout on the world stage and the respect of the international community. Kazakhstan’s experience is worthy of further promotion and popularization, as history has demonstrated that the decision to abandon nuclear weapons was correct. Non-nuclear status of a regional power has strengthened the country’s position in the struggle for nuclear disarmament, stability, world peace and global security. Renunciation of nuclear weapons has become an important factor of economic and political development, internal stability of Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan’s initiative to strengthen the nuclear nonproliferation regime is an unconditional contribution of our country to the world stability, order and security. Thanks to the responsible policy Kazakhstan is rightfully recognized as the leader of the nonproliferation regime, a model for other states. A striking illustration of this is the support of the UN General Assembly offers of the President of Kazakhstan to proclaim August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests.
