The problem of water use of transboundary rivers in the Central Asian region has become a major part of the environmental, social and economic problems of relations between the countries of the region. The issue of preservation and protection of national interests in the use of transboundary water resources of the Aral Sea basin is of particular relevance for Kazakhstan. At the same time, in conditions of limited and vulnerable water resources, the issue of improving the ecological situation of the Aral Sea and providing the southern territories of the country with the necessary amount of water is one of the integral sections of the national security of the state. The uneven distribution of water resources in Central Asia has exacerbated the interdependence of upstream and downstream countries, so the system of measures aimed at protecting the interests of water users should take priority positions in Kazakhstan's relations with neighboring countries.
The study examines the issues of water use of the transboundary rivers of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, their impact on the relations of the states of the region. The directions and possibilities of regulation of transboundary water use for the Central Asian countries are analyzed using methods of structural, systemic and comparative analysis.
